Christmas Myths? (Video)

In the following video presentation, Dr. Duke Pesta, academic director at FreedomProject Education, encapsulates key points he made in his “Christmas Myths?” cover story in the December 24 issue of The New American. In the video, Pesta notes, “For us in this modern world, when we hear the word myth, we almost always mean falsehood…. But in a larger, more comprehensive sense, the word Myth with a capital ‘M’ is ancient; it predates the modern understanding of myth. The capital ‘M’ myth is a story that is actually true. Truer than just literally true. In other words, you could think of capital ‘M’ myth as the story as seen from the perspective of God Himself.”

Pesta talks about the importance of the true and eternal capital “M” Myths, noting that “man, whether he recognizes it or not, is a mythic animal. And when we remove the eternal sense of Myth, we always and in every instance replace it with the small ‘m’ myths — political myths … and ideological myths.” That’s what the war on Christmas is all about — effacing the real meaning of Christmas with small ‘m’ myths. Yet in the miracle of Christmas, Pesta also finds hope.
