On August 17, a Moscow court found three young female performers from the Russian punk band Pussy Riot guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred,” and the band members were sentenced to two years in a penal colony — signaling the resurgence of communist totalitarianism in Russia.

As the U.S. Congress moves to grant Russia with permanent normal trade relations status, the Russian Federation continues its Cold War style naval expansion of ships and bases abroad and alliance with Syria. 

Despite conventional wisdom and reports from the mainstream media, the present day actions of the Russian Federation, led by Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev, reflect little to no deviation from the strategic anti-Western polices set forth by the Soviet Union, during the Cold War.

Found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison, communist Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout may be headed back home to Russia not even a year into his prison sentence. The plan to repatriate Bout and Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko comes from Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

On Wednesday, Russia commemorated the 67th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, with a massive military parade in Moscow. The hour long ceremony was akin to the old May Day and Victory Day rallies held by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Now it would appear that the “virus of capitalism” has infected Laos — the Lao Democratic People’s Republic — with the country’s first stock market set to open today. Laotians have high hopes that the Lao Securities Exchange will bring in much-needed foreign investment to the landlocked and impoverished Southeast Asian Communist state. 

In a gesture of goodwill to Moscow, the government of Kyrgyzstan decided to name a 14,587-foot mountain, located in the Tian-Shan range in northern Kyrgyzstan, the Putin Mountain in honor of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The announcement was made by Kyrgyz Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev, “who signed the bill to rename the peak,” according to the Telegraph.
