The Sandinistas, as I recall, came to power after overthrowing the brutal, US supported, Somosa dictatorship. Because the Sandinistas attempted to protect Nicaragua's own interests, they were of course branded as communists by the US under Reagan (resulting in 30,000 dead Nicaraguans by the way).
