Born outside of Ada, Oklahoma, in 1918, Roberts was raised in poverty with his sister and two brothers. At age 16 he contracted TB so severe that he wasn’t expected to live. A traveling evangelist, George Moncey, held a tent service in Ada that Roberts attended. It was at that service that, Roberts said, he first heard God talking to him: “It was as if I was totally alone. I heard that voice that I’ve heard many times since: ‘Son, I am going to heal you, and you are to take my healing power to your generation. You are to build me a university and build it on my authority and the Holy Spirit.’” His healing ministry continued to grow until 1963 when he founded Oral Roberts University. The university (ORU) and his evangelistic association reached its peak in 1985 when they employed more than 2,300 people with annual revenues of over $110 million. • He personally “laid hands” on an estimated 2 million people; • He wrote over 130 books, with his The Miracle of Seed Faith selling more than eight million copies; • His prime time specials on television drew 40 million viewers; • His “Abundant Life Prayer Group” continues to receive phone calls 24 hours a day, totaling more than 23 million calls since its founding in 1958; and • He reached more than 500 million people on television and radio. Worldwide, the charismatic branch of Christianity grew from an estimated 20 million to 600 million during his ministry. Photo of Oral Roberts University: AP Images Trackback(0)
