WPRI in Providence reported that David said he did not make the camouflage cap with soldiers on top as a fashion statement: It was meant to honor military members. "His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate," Morales told AP reporters. But she disagrees with the lack of sense behind the decision, saying that banning the cap "sent the wrong message to the kids, because it wasn't in any way to cause any harm to anyone. You're talking about Army men. This wasn't about guns." Centracchio presented David with a medal for his patriotic efforts on June 18, along with a certificate that allows the boy to call himself an honorary brigadier general. Zero common sense Zero tolerance seems to be nothing more than zero common sense. Perhaps Robert Welch was on to something when he suggested that members get much more involved in the local PTA and by extension the school board. Time to bring back the common sense that our educational system seems to be lacking and lacking to teach. |

... Well written article. If a young child demonstrates the appreciation for the Armed Forces by making a hat with TOY Army Soldiers with weapons and this great nations colors it should not be frowned upon. Instead, it should be embraced. I do not agree with the school's decision. The freedoms we have and enjoy currently is because of those Army men (service members) that replicate the countless Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, that never made it back to their homes because they were defending our nation (and schools). I appreciate your efforts by making the true sense of things. |

... I strongly believe that is absolutely ridiculous and exhibits a complete lack of common sense for "educators" to come up with a decision condemning someone for wearing a hat with toy soldiers on it. My belief is that they should not be teaching anything. This goes against the grain of everything that America stands for.It smacks of a communist country. Maybe that's where we are headed with thinking such as this. Sincerely, Raymond T. Frattone Richboro, Pa. |

David Morales, a Coventry, Rhode Island, second grader, was recently banned from wearing a patriotic cap he made for a school project to school because it was adorned with plastic toy soldiers carrying tiny plastic “weapons.”
