Larry McDonald was born on April 1, 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 17, he was admitted to Emory University School of Medicine and in 1957 was graduated with his M.D. He then joined the U.S. Navy, serving on active duty for four years as a Navy physician and flight surgeon. For the duration of his life, McDonald remained in the Naval Reserve and was eventually promoted to the rank of Captain. The documentary also featured an exclusive interview of Larry Grathwohl, the only FBI agent ever to infiltrate successfully the Weather Underground terrorist group. This footage was used on the Glenn Beck Show.
There can be no dispute, however, about McDonald's distinguished role as one of the leading American patriots of the 20th Century.

... Thank you Mr. Gomez for this wonderful tribute to a great American. I attended a number of his speeches and had the opportunity to spend two afternoons with him in his Washington office. A large watercolor print of Arnold Friberg's "The Prayer At Valley Forge," depicting Washington kneeling beside his horse, was prominently displayed on the wall in his personal office. Dr. McDonald was movie star handsome, articulate, a patriot and in complete control of himself. It's a shame when the USSR reportedly "collapsed" that no one attempted to get the government files on the truth of what really happened to KAL Flight 007. The first reports were that the plane was forced to land on Sakhalin Island. Whether it was shot down or forced down safely or otherwise, it was to assassinate McDonald or silence him through imprisonment. As I recall almost no debris and no bodies were ever recovered from the sea. Sadly, then President Reagan never mentioned Congressman McDonald by name when he addressed the nation concerning the alleged attack. This tragedy needs a full investigation as does the attack on and destruction of the USS Scorpion by the Soviets. Everyone should read Larry McDonald's book, "We Hold These Truths: A Reverent Review of the U.S. Constitution." |

Larry vs. the CFR Thanks for the tribute to a true hero. Researching Larry McDonald and his quest to investigate the CFR is what brought me to trust in the John Birch Society. It is hard to find a group with true intentions, but when I realized Larry died fighting for good cause, I realized JBS was the real thing. God Bless you Larry, please put in a good word for us with the man upstairs. |

How Big A Danger To The Soviets? Once he met a Soviet KGB defector who said to him, "Each enemy of the Soviet Union has a file on him. You, Congressman McDonald, have an office on you." |

McDonald’s Life’s Mission Dishonored By The New American Allow me to point to the article The New American has posted above the article on Larry McDonald, "Chinese Central Bank Head Defection Rumor: Communist Power Struggle?" Does anyone see the irony here? Larry McDonald was a champion in combating communism and the disinformation it spewed, yet you dishonor McDonald's memory by posting an article that IS disinformation. In case The New American forgot, KGB defector Major Anatoliy Golitsyn affirmed in his 1984 book 'New Lies for Old' that there are NO power struggles in communist nations. Those who foster the notion that such power struggles exist in communist nations are facilitators of communist disinformation. Shame on The New American! When analyzing the USSR's (yes the USSR, not Russia) and China's governments, one must remember that only one goal exits for those governments, and that is to neutralize the West. Nothing else. The reason the Chinese encourage the notion that power struggles exist is to mislead Western political analysts; if there are power struggles in China, then how dangerous can China be is the signal the Chinese government (in consultation with their Soviet allies) want the West to think. |

President, Foundation for Economic Education I knew Larry personally. He was every bit the great man this excellent article casts him as. A solid American patriot who understood what freedom is all about and why we must preserve it at all costs. |

Congressman Lawrence McDonald had served as a medical doctor, an officer in the U.S. Navy, a U.S. Representative from Georgia, and the second leader of The John Birch Society before being invited (along with several other members of Congress) to attend a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the United States–South Korea Mutual Defense Treaty in Seoul. McDonald was aboard Korean Air Lines flight 007 en route to the event when the plane was shot down by a Soviet fighter jet — 27 years ago — on September 1, 1983. Although history has all but forgotten Larry McDonald and the sacrifice he made for this country and freedom, we here at The New American have not forgotten and never will.
