Yet that dark time birthed another quiet hero, one who saved as many as 860,000 Jewish lives. Today, however, few know of his accomplishments, few sing his praises. And Steven Spielberg will undoubtedly never make a movie lauding him. On the contrary, this man is roundly maligned as a WWII villain who was at best indifferent to the plight of the people in the Nazis’ crosshairs. This man is Eugenio Pacelli. But he is better known as Pope Pius XII. It is unquestionable that Pius XII intervened to save countless Jews at a time most nations — even FDR’s America — refused to accept these refugees.... He smuggled Jews into the Americas and Asia. He ordered the lifting of cloister for men and women to enter monasteries, convents and churches to hide 7,000 Jews of Rome in a single day. Krupp provided a few more details in a Daily News piece entitled “Stop persecuting Pius — WWII pontiff is branded ‘Hitler’s Pope,’ but he did much to save the Jews,” revealing: More evidence shows Pius secretly moved Jews out of Europe. We [at the PTWF] conducted dozens of video interviews, among them a witness account of a priest who revealed a secret “underground railroad,” directly ordered by the Pope, sending more than 10,000 Jews to the U.S. via the Dominican Republic. Many countries would not accept “Jews,” so they were given false baptismal papers to travel as Catholics. Pius successfully stopped the deportation of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews when he appealed to the Regent of Hungary. Similarly, he desperately tried to impact the deportation policies of many other countries to, in his words, “save this vibrant community.” Yet, while Krupp is currently the most visible of the pope’s defenders, he is far from the first. Another is Rabbi David G. Dalin, Ph.D., a widely published scholar of American Judaism and author of the 2005 book The Myth of Hitler’s Pope. He provided a trove of information about Pius’ efforts in his piece “A Righteous Gentile: Pope Pius XII and the Jews.” And here is a small sampling: Throughout World War II, he [Pius] spoke out on behalf of Europe’s Jews. When Pius learned of the Nazi atrocities in Poland, he urged the bishops of Europe to do all they could to save the Jews and other victims of Nazi persecution. On January 19, 1940, at the Pope’s instruction, Vatican radio and L’Osservatore Romano revealed to the world “the dreadful cruelties of uncivilized tyranny” that the Nazis were inflicting on Jewish and Catholic Poles. Hitler’s Nemesis Many of the critics [of Pius] share a view of the world that runs counter to the Catholic Church, and they have tried to advance their view and discredit the Church by denigrating Pope Pius XII. In fact, as Rychlak points out, the Catholic Church is being attacked for the same reason Christianity is always targeted: It advances the concept of Absolute Truth. For this reason, he writes, “it is their main target — not Pius or any other -individual.” — Photo: AP Images Trackback(0)

Landon's Deceit Landon, you are the one being dishonest. You didn't mention that Pacelli was NOT pope when he signed the concordat. He was signing it on behalf of the pope at the time. So whatever you think of the concordat, he was acting as a diplomat when he signed it. He did not have decision making power as far as that went. But you show your true colors when you make the fallacious claim that Pius didn't help Jews who hadn't 'converted.' The Jewish sources mentioned in the article themselves say that Pius saved as many as 800,000 Jews. Why do you just ignore this? I can only conclude that you are a liar. |

Bigotry Reichs Condordat of July 20, 1933 Article 1 "The German Reich guarantees freedom of profession and public practice of the Catholic religion. It acknowledges the right of the Catholic Church, within the limit of those laws which are applicable to all, to manage and regulate her own affairs independently, and, within the framework of her own competence, to publish laws and ordinances binding on her members." Article 14 " Catholic clerics who hold an ecclesiastical office in Germany or who exercise pastoral or educational functions must: (a) be German citizens (b) matriculated from a German secondary school (c) studied philosphy and theology for at least three years at a German State University, German ecclesiastical college, or a papal college in Rome." Article 16 "Before God and on the Holy Gospels I swear and promise as becomes a bishop, loyalty to the German Reich and to the State of . . . I swear and promise to honor the legally constituted Government and to cause the clergy of my diocese to honor it. In the performance of my spiritual office and in my solicitude for the welfare and the interests of the German Reich, I will endeavor to avoid all detrimental acts which might endanger it." It was not unusual for countries back then, nor now, to place limitations on churches. Respecting the governmental laws of a country and not making any attempts to overthrow the government is not embracing said governments laws as the gospel, but rather respecting established laws. Not one Biblical Truth, Catholic Docrine or Canon Law was broken or affected by this agreement because.. "Render unto Caesar"...and all that. |

The Scarlet and the Black Thank you a zillion times over for this assessment of Pope Pius XII. I would like to recommend a movie that deals with just this subject: The Scarlet and the Black, with Gregory Peck, Christopher Plummer (who was in Sound of Music), and Sir John Gielgud. It's a true story about Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty and his work within the Vatican during the German occupation - a magnificent story of courage. |

Forced Converts? The article says: "Many countries would not accept 'Jews,' so they were given false baptismal papers to travel as Catholics." I think that if I were accepting such false papers to save my life and the lives of my family members, I would study the Catechism in order to pass the test if questioned by any unfriendly authorities along the way. Anyone who thinks that amounts to "forced conversion" is an idiot. |

Scarlet & Black Patricia made a good point, the "Scarlet & the Black" is a factual and true series of events in which the Vatican played a very active role in the rescue and smuggeling of Jews from Italy during the War. Italy lost fewer Jews to the Nazi's than any other European state. Monsignor O'Flaherty (an Irish Priest from Cariciveen, County Kerry who died in 1963) always said that he was acting under direct orders from Pius. Jews who could not get Vatican passports were also issued Irish and Portugese ones, in which to escape. These papers and more direct efforts were orchestrated by Flarhety and the Holy See |

Truth be told "On September 1, 1939, Nazi tanks crossed the Polish border. This was the beginning of World War II. In his encyclical, Summi Pontificatus (October 27, 1939), Pius XII condemned Hitler's actions." "Pope Pius XII invited Jews and other refugees to join the Vatican Palatine Guards. In a few months, their number increased from four hundred to four thousand." Canada declared war on Germany on September 10, 1939, long before the U.S.. The U.S. declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, one day after what Roosevelt would call "a date that will live in infamy"; the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt finally opened his eyes but it was not until three days after declaring war on Japan that he finally declares war on Germany (and Italy) - December 11, 1941, over two years after the holocaust began! "Rabbi Zolli is the most important non-Catholic witness to the role of Pius XII in wartime Italy during the Nazi occupation and persecution of Jews. A biblical scholar whose courage and integrity cannot be challenged, Zolli, his wife and his twenty-year-old daughter Miriam, were each hidden my different members of the Roman resistance party Giustizia e Libertà." "On July 23, 1944 Rabbi Zolli addressed the Jewish Community in the Synagogue and publicly thanked the Holy Father for all he did to save the Jewish Community of Rome. His talk was transmitted by radio." Doesn't sound like a rejection from the Jewish community to me. "When he [Pope Pius XII] died in 1958, the Jewish communities of Europe praised him for his help and expressed sorrow and gratitude for his solicitude during the Holocaust." I think you might find that the bigotry you hold onto is the same bigotry that fueled the hatred Hitler held in his heart for the Jews. reference sources: NewAdvent.com, JewishVirtualLibrary.org, Worldwar-2.net |

... "On February 13, 1945, Rabbi Zolli was baptized by Rome's Auxiliary Bishop Luigi Traglia in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli." - Jewish Virtual Library January 27, 1945 - Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz. April 4, 19454 - Ohrdruf camp is liberated by the Americans. April 10, 1945 - Buchenwald Concentration Camp is liberated by the Allies. April 15, 1945 - British troops liberate Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. April 29, 1945 - The U.S. 7th Army liberates Dachau Concentration Camp. May 2, 1945 - Theresienstadt taken over by the Red Cross. May 5, 1945 - Mauthausen concentration camp is liberated. - Worldwar-2.net According to these facts, Zolli converted months before the war ended. How could there have been any chance for him to be once-again named chief rabbi if he had already converted to Catholicism? Do the math and I think you'll conclude that Zolli cared less about being chief rabbi than he did about converting to the Catholic faith. "A biblical scholar whose courage and integrity cannot be challenged, Zolli, his wife and his twenty-year-old daughter Miriam, were each hidden my different members of the Roman resistance party Giustizia e Libertà." - Jewish Virtual Library He, his wife, and daughter, according to the Jewish Virtual Library, were NOT hidden in the Vatican. |

Truth prevails I'm trying to take you seriously but find that difficult when the statements I made from legitimate sources is ignored in favor of opinions. No proof has been offered to support the claim that Zolli disregarded the Jewish community. The fact Zolli converted to Catholicism must sting as badly as when St. Paul converted, so I can believe the Jewish community disregarding him. I tried to find some support for your claim of "jews were run thru the streets of Rome as part of ageless Catholic Christmas ceremonies." I could not find any, even at the Jewish Virtual Library web site. What my search did uncover was a ceremony in Lithuania in which people ran through the streets, wearing masks depicting what they considered Jewish stereotypes, but they were not actual Jews doing the running. If you have a source for this claim, I would be interested in reading it. |

Truth prevails prt 2 "The Palestine Post (March 31, 1946) reported that Rabbi Herzog "told of his audience with the Pope, who had received him on a Sunday early in March. Their conversation...was mainly on the subject of the 8,000 Jewish children in Poland, France, Belgium and Holland who were [being] brought up in monasteries and by Christian families. He had the Vatican's promise of help to bring those children back into the Jewish fold." -beliefnet.com "The Pope must have come through on that promise, because Rabbi Herzog continued to praise his conduct toward the Jewish community throughout the Pope's life. As Dr. Leon Kubowitzky, of the World Jewish Congress, said in 1964: "I can state now that I hardly know of a single case where Catholic institutions refused to return Jewish children." -beliefnet.com |

Truth prevails prt 3 "Consider the case of the Polish Catholic woman Leokadia Jaromirska, who was later honored as a Righteous Gentile. She sought the Pope's permission to keep the little girl whom she was raising as a Catholic even though the Jewish father had returned. In his book "Avenue of the Righteous" (1980), author Peter Hellman reports that Jaromirska "was instructed by the Pope to return the child to its father." The Pope explained that it "was her duty as a Catholic not only to give back the child, but do it with good will and in friendship." -beliefnet.com "The European press has now fully exposed the falsehood of Melloni's account. In a front-page story entitled "The real document of Pius XII and the Jewish children," the Italian newspaper Il Giornale compared the text of the original document to Melloni's claims and vindicated Pope Pius XII. A different article in that same issue, entitled "The Hasty Scoop of Professor Melloni," chastised Melloni for publishing an incomplete document. The paper Il Foglio explained: "Now it is no longer a case of Pius XII. It is no longer a case of Roncalli. It is now a case of Melloni." Jewish historian Michael Tagliacozzo, a leading authority on (and survivor of) the 1943 Nazi roundup of Roman Jews, wrote in the Italian newspaper Avvenire: "Pius XII kidnapper of children? But let us be done with such foolishness!" Tagliacozzo confirmed that Jewish children were "returned to their parents as soon as possible." -beliefnet.com Truth prevails. And perspectives can change. |

Communist Propaganda It is interesting for me to read this article in the John Birch Society-affiliated New American magazine, because I am a Jewish Life member of The John Birch Society who was persecuted by Hitler as a child. After coming to America, I was influenced by American Jews in my social circle that Pope Pacelli was a Nazi. Now I have come to realize that some of my American Jewish acquaintances were poisoned by Communist propaganda all of these years. The motive of these Communists has always been to destroy the Catholic Church and other Christian churches and to infiltrate the Jewish religion with their hatred and fear of Christianity. They are impelled to do this by slandering Catholic clergy with Big Lies that are then widely believed. This anti-Christian "tradition" was no doubt inculcated in them by the Order of the Illuminati, under Adam Weishaupt, from the 18th century onward. From Chapter 8, titled The Coming Persecution of the Faithful in the book Freedom on the Altar: [A]n internationally famous, highly influential author on sustainable development told me bluntly, "Religion must die. It is the fundamental cause of virtually all social, economic, and ecological problems and much of the violence in the world." — Gerald Barney, director of the Millennium Institute and former director of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund Any form of ... church conservatism is to be rejected.... To put it bluntly: No regressive or repressive religion — whether Christian, Islamic, Jewish or of whatever provenance—has a long-term future. — Globalist theologian Hans Küng |

... The Catholic Church is certianly not without it's problems (a shortage of clergy/ accusations of financial mismanagment & of course aiding & abetting pedophile priests) but in all fairness, THIS (WWII) was one of the churches shining moments in history. As has been reported, prior to the 1960's Pius' efforts were honored by most of the worlds Jews. Relations between Catholics & Jews, which had always been stained before this, were strenghtened by the Pontiff and his efforts to help European Jewry during the war. |

God bless this author As the New World Order continues its media blitz to discredit Christians, a fine article like this showing the truth and decency of the true Christians/Jews as greatly appreciated. The truly faithful Jew and Christian will be tested greatly in the years to come. Let us not forget the truth: As Apostle Paul said: If Jesus did not truly rise from the dead, then we are all liers. If he did, then the gospel is true. He did. |

The word “hero” so often conjures up images of the brash and the bold. We may think of Audie Murphy’s WWII exploits, the Spartans at Thermopylae, or the doomed holdouts at the Alamo. But then there are the quiet heroes, people such as Oskar Schindler. Ever since Schindler’s List hit the silver screen in 1993, his clandestine efforts resulting in the rescue of almost 1,200 Jews from Nazi death camps have been well known.
