School T-Shirt Phobia

March 12, 2008

A 14-year-old student who went to Penn Manor High School in Pennsylvania was ordered by school officials to turn his T-shirt inside out, an option school officials give to students who are wearing offensive or policy infringing clothing.

The student’s T-shirt bore the image of a military sidearm, with the front pocket saying:

Volunteer Homeland Security

On the back, over another image of the weapon, were the words:

Special Issue Resident Lifetime License — United States Terrorist Hunting Permit —
Permit No. 91101 — Gun Owner — No Bag Limit

We are reminded daily not to forget 9/11, and that we are engaged in a "war on terror." This type of T-shirt would be in keeping with these government sentiments and appeal to the junior high crowd.

But the school district has determined that the school must create a safe environment for students in the post-Columbine era, and bringing even the image of a gun to school violates the district's no-gun policy.

All this, of course, is based on the premise that all guns are bad, anyone who carries one has the potential for violence and is immediately suspect, gun use as self defense is wrong, and even the image of a gun is somehow dangerous.
