Are They Evil or Just Misguided?

When President Obama and Speaker Pelosi were asked why someone would be put in jail for not buying health insurance, both Obama and Pelosi stated that it was “appropriate punishment.” I guess that’s what the French revolutionaries thought when they set up the guillotine. Remember Madame Defarge in Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities? She knitted while the heads rolled off the guillotine.

Not since debtor’s prison was abolished have we seen such a return to legal barbarism by our politicians. The question then arises: Are Obama and Pelosi evil? With their fanatical insistence that America be saddled with a national healthcare program that the majority of Americans don’t want, it is the opinion of this writer that both Obama and Pelosi are indeed evil. It becomes plainer every day as they deliberately set out to destroy the limited government given us by the Founding Fathers. If that is not evil, I don’t know what is.

What they are proposing is clearly unconstitutional. The Federal government does not have the power to force anyone to buy anything.

Or are Obama and Pelosi simply misguided? President Obama took an oath to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States. The oath Madame Speaker took reads:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Thus, Madame Pelosi swore to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, while she herself is one of its domestic enemies.

On the matter of oaths, the Constitution states: “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

As politicians at the highest level of the American government, we must assume that they have actually read the Constitution and understand the limitations it imposes on the federal government. Yet, they are obviously not out to uphold the Constitution, but to destroy it. Indeed, they are not only not loyal to the Constitution, they are its betrayers.

In plain words, they lied under oath. For many years they have occupied offices of responsibility under false pretences. Their secret aim has always been to destroy our constitutional government and replace it with a socialist dictatorship. And now that they control the levers of government power, they are proceeding to implement their long-held dream of a socialist America.

Are they not evil doers, and are they not clearly guilty of crimes impeachable under the Constitution they swore to uphold? But even conservative politicians, who are eyewitnesses to this blatant political criminality, are too frightened to stage a rebellion in Congress. And by their timidity they are abetting the commission of this evil by pretending that what Pelosi, Reid, and Obama are doing is permissible under our form of government.

Instead of debating the merits and demerits of a national healthcare program, they should have simply boycotted any such discussions and accused Obama, Pelosi, Reid and their cohorts of violating their oaths of office.

And so the American people will have to wait until the Congressional elections of 2010 to show what they think of the socialists presently in power in Washington.

What the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress have shown us is what they really believe when they have the power to implement their socialist policies. That is why Senator Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, when asked where did the federal government get the authority to force everyone to buy health insurance, replied indignantly: “We have plenty of authority.“ Unfortunately, Republicans were also responsible for creating this totalitarian state of mind by not opposing it earlier when it was obvious that the unchecked expansion of government would inevitably lead to the end of individual freedom.

Will the totalitarians lose their power in 2010? Not if they can help it. They may lose the majority in Congress, but they will still have the White House and all of the departments of the Executive Branch. Only God knows how much damage they will be able to do to the American Republic until the next presidential election.

But what is especially disheartening is the knowledge that there are so many people in high places “in the land of the free and home of the brave” who are statist totalitarians at heart.

Back in the 1930s, Sinclair Lewis wrote a prophetic novel, It Can’t Happen Here. Of course, as a liberal, his plot was of a totalitarian takeover by a brutal dictator. But what is actually happening today is a totalitarian takeover by the addle-brained left. Yes, it can happen here. Americans are no different from all of those other nations that have succumbed to political tyranny at the hands of trusted politicians.

Hopefully, there are still enough Americans imbued with an understanding of what the Founding Fathers gave us to stand up against the totalitarians among us.
