UN Slammed for Its Forced Abortions in China Using U.S. Funds

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is under heavy fire after an investigation by the Population Research Institute (PRI) showed yet again that the UN is working with the communist dictatorship ruling mainland China to enforce its barbaric “one-child” policy — complete with forced abortions, involuntary sterilization, kidnapping of “illegal” children, and other brutal tactics. The evidence of UN complicity in the atrocious human rights violations is undeniable, according to PRI President Steven Mosher (pictured above), who said U.S. taxpayers should permanently halt funding to the global anti-population agency.

Testifying before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Programs this week, Mosher and several other witnesses described the mass abuses being perpetrated by the UNFPA and its communist partners in Beijing. Also offering testimony was a victim of the Chinese regime’s “population control” who was kidnapped by the “family planning” officials before having her baby murdered in cold blood.

American law prohibits spending taxpayer money on initiatives or organizations that support or participate in forced abortions. But because President Obama restored U.S. government funding for the UN population body in 2009, American taxpayers are again helping to finance the mass slaughter. For the 2012 budget, the administration sought almost $50 million for the UN agency. But the outcry is growing.

“Our conclusion is that the UNFPA is directly responsible for forced abortions and forced sterilizations in China,” Mosher told lawmakers in prepared remarks, citing an investigation carried out over the last three years. “China’s one-child policy constitutes the longest-running and most far-reaching violation of human rights the world has ever seen. Four hundred million Chinese children are missing because of this policy.”

It is hardly a secret that the UN population agency is deeply intertwined with the monstrosities. Consider that as recently as December of 2010, the Vice-Minister of the communist dictatorship’s “National Population and Family Planning Commission” thanked UNFPA for “its constant support to China’s population and family planning undertakings during the past thirty years and more.”

Despite lies by Communist Chinese functionaries to conceal the horror, the abuses are hardly occasional missteps by overzealous population officials, either — they are “the very lifeblood of the program,” Mosher told lawmakers, noting that the brutal population policies are coercive by design. “The one-child policy, like all political campaigns of the Chinese Communist party, is coercive by virtue of its fines, its targets, its quotas, and by the extraordinary pressure that the highest levels of the Chinese government put on lower-level officials,” he noted.

And the UNFPA, financed by unwitting American taxpayers while U.S. political leaders continue to borrow money from the communist dictatorship, is at the heart of the whole program. “The U.N. Population Fund has been complicit in China’s one-child policy from the first, not merely turning a blind eye to abuses, but facilitating them in various ways,” Mosher explained. “This is nowhere more clearly demonstrated than in the U.N. Population Fund’s ‘model county program,’ where UNFPA trained officials oversee the enforcement of the one-child policy, and where abuses are rampant.”

The subcommittee hearing — barely noticed by the establishment press — was chaired by Rep. Christopher Smith (R-N.J.), a longtime critic of the Communist Chinese regime’s myriad crimes against humanity. It was called in response to the global outcry surrounding a forced late-term abortion conducted by Communist Chinese population-control bureaucrats that became an international scandal highlighting the regime’s brutality.

In June, Feng Jianmei and her husband Deng Jiyuan had their unborn child murdered by the communist regime seven months into the pregnancy. When photos of the bloody, lifeless child hit the international media, worldwide condemnation was swift. The Chinese regime responded by beating and persecuting Deng. Only when the whole world was watching did the tyrants finally apologize and offer monetary compensation to shut them up — not that money could ever replace the couple’s murdered baby.

“These cases are only the tip of the iceberg; numerous forced abortion tragedies occur every single day in China,” said ChinaAid President Bob Fu during this week’s subcommittee hearing, asking lawmakers to stop sending U.S. funds to “family planning” agencies and to prevent officials responsible for the barbarity from entering the country. “The massive violation of the rights of women and their unborn babies through government action and by legal means in the implementation of China’s forcibly enforced ‘one-child’ family planning policy has been going on for over thirty years already.”

Women’s rights advocates slammed the abuses, too. “For decades, the UNFPA and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) have worked hand in hand with the Chinese population control machine, which is coercive,” explained Women’s Rights Without Frontiers President Reggie Littlejohn in prepared remarks. “They are funded by many nations, not only in Europe but the world over, including the United States.”

Littlejohn called on the U.S. government to halt all funding for coercive population control in China and for investigations into the involvement of the UN and Planned Parenthood in the atrocities. She also said pro-choice activists in America should join the battle to stop the horror.

After the hearing, Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser also added her voice to the growing chorus demanding an end to U.S. taxpayer funding. “President Obama must immediately condemn China’s routine violations of the dignity of women and children and cut off U.S. taxpayer funding of the UNFPA, which helps to implement these atrocities,” she said.

“By sending millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars per year to the UNFPA, we are made complicit in the death of Feng’s child. What’s more, we are effectively sabotaging the efforts of human rights activists like Chen Guangcheng who are fighting desperately to protect Chinese women and children,” Dannenfelser continued. “Women in China and around the world deserve better from President Obama and the United States. We must stand up for them.”

Even voices in the largely pro-abortion European Union are now speaking out. On July 5, in response to the international outcry surrounding the murder of Feng’s unborn child, the European Parliament passed the “Resolution on the forced abortion scandal in China” to condemn the wanton human rights violations conducted under the guise of China’s “one-child” policy.

Some EU officials think more still needs to be done. “Certain international organizations, such as International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International, provide family planning services in China. At the same time, the European Commission and other international bodies provide both structural and project funds for these organizations,” observed center-right MEP Alojz Peterle, a former Prime Minister of Slovenia. “Both have entered into public partnerships with the commission in the implementation of projects in China, which raises concern as to whether European funds are being used to fund coercive practices.”

In May, news that American and British taxpayers were financing forced sterilizations in India also sparked a global uproar. However, the problem of U.S. taxpayer money funding human rights violations to reduce the number of humans is nothing new. In fact, for several decades, under policies originally devised by former Secretary of State Henry “New World Order” Kissinger and others, the U.S. government has been one of the primary financiers of the often-barbaric population-control efforts. Billionaires such as CNN founder and UN Foundation boss Ted Turner have even praised and supported China’s barbaric policies, too.

Under President George W. Bush, whose administration prevented tax dollars from flowing to the UN’s population programs to comply with U.S. law, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell highlighted the problem. “UNFPA’s support of, and involvement in, China’s population-planning activities allows the Chinese government to implement more effectively its program of coercive abortion,” he explained. “Therefore, it is not permissible to continue funding UNFPA at this time.”

Under Obama, however, UNFPA has received around $150 million already. Vice President Joe Biden did not even pretend to be concerned about the savage slaughter, saying only that he “fully understands” the Communist Chinese regime’s one-child policy and is “not second guessing” it. Presumably that is why the administration continues to borrow money from the mass-murdering dictatorship, to fund the regime’s atrocities through the UN and foreign aid.
