Over Two-thirds of GOP Supports Obama Impeachment, Poll Shows

Despite reluctance among the establishment wing of the Republican Party to impeach Obama, the GOP grassroots is overwhelmingly in favor of impeachment, a new poll commissioned by the online Huffington Post revealed. More than six in 10 Americans also said the president has “abused his authority.” Other polls listing specific abuses have revealed even higher levels of support for removing Obama from office.

The most recent survey results came shortly after former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin became the latest high-profile political figure to openly promote impeaching the president, saying the abuse from the “lawless” and “imperial” administration could no longer be ignored or tolerated. The poll also comes after the South Dakota Republican Party last month became the first to adopt a resolution officially calling for impeachment

According to the latest YouGov/HuffPost poll, at 35 percent, over one-third of all American voters support impeachment. Among Republicans, 68 percent said impeaching Obama would be justified. For Democrats, though, the number is just eight percent. Independents were evenly divided, with 37 percent backing impeachment against 37 percent who did not. In a similar poll taken over a year ago, just half of GOP voters supported impeachment. However, overall, Americans opposed to impeaching Obama still have a narrow nine-percent margin.

While the growing grassroots momentum to remove the president from office shocked some administration apologists, enthusiasm for impeachment in the latest poll was much lower than the results found in other surveys. As The New American reported last year, for example, other polls uncovered about 50 percent support for impeaching Obama after asking whether particular scandals were worthy of impeachment. Other surveys found over two thirds of Americans believe the federal government is “out of control” and a threat to liberty.

About half of poll respondents in the latest survey said Obama had exceeded the limits placed on the executive branch by the U.S. Constitution — a figure that exposes at least 50 percent of Americans as having a seriously deficient understanding of constitutional principles since he exceeds his constitutional bounds on a routine basis. Almost nine in 10 Republicans and more than half of independents said the president has exceeded his authority, the results revealed. Just 16 percent of Democrats thought so, while about two-thirds said he had not.

In a separate question, survey respondents were asked about four statements. Over 60 percent of voters said Obama “has abused his powers as president” — including 96 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of independents. Unsurprisingly, the responses to that question were overlooked by the Huffington Post and the pollster in their reports about the results. Both outfits were more concerned with hyping similar levels of support for impeaching George W. Bush seven years ago.

The latest poll was sparked by growing calls for Obama’s impeachment by heavy-hitting conservative political figures. As The New American has been reporting, U.S. lawmakers are increasingly bringing up the subject of impeachment as the administration continues to override Congress and the Constitution with “executive orders” and similar schemes. Multiple members of the House of Representatives have suggested enough votes to impeach Obama are already there, but securing a two-thirds Senate majority for conviction would be tougher.

Ex-Governor Palin, who ran for vice president on the GOP ticket, joined the growing chorus last week. “It’s time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment,” she wrote in an op-ed. “The many impeachable offenses of Barack Obama can no longer be ignored. If after all this he’s not impeachable, then no one is.”

Among the myriad alleged high crimes and misdemeanors perpetrated by the Obama administration, it appears the border crisis sparked by the president’s “amnesty” schemes finally pushed many Republicans to call for impeachment. Other examples cited by impeach-Obama activists include Fast and Furious, the IRS scandal, NSA spying, unconstitutional wars, mass-murder via drone, EPA abuses, snooping on journalists, Benghazi, unconstitutional executive actions, refusal to uphold laws, releasing Taliban leaders without consulting Congress, and much more.

“If Obama doesn’t get impeached when the federal courts have ruled against him 13 times in a row, including a unanimous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court with some of his own appointments, nobody will ever be impeached, the rule of law will be gone, and checks and balances between the three branches of government will be a thing of the past,” said South Dakota Tea Party leader Dr. Allen Unruh, who sponsored the recently approved impeachment resolution. “Liberty has never been more threatened.”

The Founding Fathers understood the dangers of power and corruption, Dr. Unruh told The New American. “We the People need to rise up and defend the Constitution,” he said. “Nixon was a choir boy compared to Obama; he doesn’t care about what the law says. If all of this doesn’t qualify as high crimes and misdemeanors, nothing will. We need to impeach him now. Our country is at stake.”

As the polls show, GOP support for impeachment is soaring at the grassroots level. The establishment wing of the Republican Party, however, is doing its best to frustrate its base — especially House Speaker John Boehner, who is suing the administration while ensuring that funds to implement Obama’s agenda continue flowing. How long the bipartisan ruling class in D.C. will be able to hold back the tsunami of public outrage remains unclear.
