Escaping the Political Plantation: Black Georgia Democrat Supports Trump; Blasts His Own Party

An African-American Georgia state representative has come forward with his strong support for Republican President Donald Trump. Vernon Jones (D-Lithonia) announced two weeks ago that he is endorsing Trump in his 2020 reelection effort and had strong words for the Democrat Party.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Jones because of blow-back from Georgia Democrats and constituents. State senator and chairman of the state’s Democrat Party Nikema Williams referred to him as an “embarrassment.” Several other Democrats have announced they will now be supporting his opponent, Rhonda Taylor, in the upcoming election.

But on Sunday’s Fox and Friends, Jones laid out the reasons that he has become so disenchanted with the Democrat Party of today.

“It’s obvious that the Democratic Party does not care about the black vote,” Jones said. “They have taken it for granted and they certainly do not have room under that so-called big tent for those of us who are black and independent with conservative leanings.”

Like many other blacks, Jones feels that today’s Democrat Party has left America’s blacks behind in favor of courting the votes of new immigrants and other “intersectional” groups.

“[Democrats] don’t take our vote as for value,” Jones said. “They think it will just be there for them. No longer are we going to be a part of that.”

Jones initially announced he was going to step down from his seat in the Georgia legislature due to backlash from some constituents, but later recanted, saying, “I’m going to remain on the battlefield. I’m going to complete my term. I’m going to continue to put my country before my party.”

In a tweet, Jones stated, “The outpour [sic] of support I received was too great for me to ignore. I will not allow the Democrats to bully me into submission. I will not let them win. I will NOT resign.”

In his endorsement of Trump, Jones touted the president’s leadership skills and results he has gained for the black community.

“This president has shown two great things: one leadership, two results,” Jones said.

“What he has done for the African-American community is unparalleled to any president in modern times and so I put my party last,” Jones went on. “I put my country before my party and I wish more people would do that. This country can get many other things accomplished and done for its people, the American people.”

Specifically, Jones lauded the president’s support of historical black colleges, his handling of the economy prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2018 criminal justice reform bill.

“Donald Trump has a proven record of getting things done period, for all Americans, and certainly what he has done for the African-American community is just amazing,” Jones said. “We need to reelect him. I will do everything I can to help him get reelected.”

Jones is absolutely correct in his assertion that Democrats have taken the African-American vote for granted — they’ve done that for decades. Conservative blacks are now coming out from hiding, and their message is being heard from voices such as Jones, Candace Owens, Brandon Tatum, and YouTube celebrities Diamond and Silk. And that message — that black people are allowed to think for themselves when it comes to politics — is resonating.

Jones put it very plainly: “The Democrat Party doesn’t own me,” Jones wrote. “I’m not just leaving the plantation; I’m burning it down.”
