Success or failure for a political lobbyist often comes down to access; without easy access to legislators, it is naturally much harder to apply the pressure to drive legislation in the desired direction. But lobbyists in Austin, Texas, may soon begin applying a variation on Chairman Mao’s saying, “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun” — albeit not in the way the Marxist dictator had in mind.
“And even if there were only one Communist in the State Department, that would still be one Communist too many.”
— Senator Joseph McCarthy, at the 1952 Republican National Convention
Researchers in Sri Lanka have found what they say is a link between abortion and breast cancer. According to the study conducted by scientists at the University of Colombo, having an abortion can triple a woman’s risk of the disease, and, in fact, abortion is the greatest reported risk factor associated with breast cancer. The latest study is the fourth in the last 14 months to show such a link, following similar findings by researchers in China, Turkey, and the United States.
Part I of this series opened with a recent study on schizophrenia that has sparked renewed controversy on the legitimacy of pre-screening for and treating psychological afflictions, most of which (in the generic sense) can be defined as "thought disorders." It focused on the University of North Carolina's Schizophrenia Research Center under Dr. John H. The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote on the nomination of Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court on Tuesday at 10 a.m., after which the nomination would proceed to the full Senate. With Democratic majorities both in the Judiciary Committee and the full Senate, the Obama administration expects confirmation to be a relatively smooth victory, but the GOP may have other plans. Unfortunately for the GOP, some liberal Republicans are expected to break from the party line and confirm the left-wing Supreme Court nominee.
Last week, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs made remarks indicating it was possible for the Democrats to lose control of the House of Representatives in November’s election. Already irritated Democrats were further angered because they viewed this admission as the White House intending to distance itself from what may truly be huge losses at the hands of disgruntled American voters.
The wisdom of the Founding Fathers of the American Republic was such that the preservation of religious liberty was enunciated in the first clause of the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The application of those 16 words has often been a matter of debate, but the preservation of freedom of religion has been understood as numbered among the fundamental liberties of free people living under the U.S. Constitution.
